CP-40 Organoclay for Solvent-Based Formulations

CP-40 is a conventional organoclay rheological additive for low- to intermediate-polarity organic liquids. It helps build thixotropy, suspend pigments and fillers, and improve sag resistance in coatings, lubricating grease, adhesives and sealants.

CP-40 is a dedicated product grade, separate from CP-34. It is an organic derivative of montmorillonite clay supplied as a fine white powder for solvent-based systems. Use the grade-specific properties and processing guidance below, and request the current CP-40 TDS and batch COA when qualifying material for production.

For formulation review, send our technical team your solvent or base oil, resin or binder, pigment and filler loading, and target flow or sag behavior. Request the latest CP-40 TDS, SDS, COA or a sample.

What CP-40 Does in a Formulation

When dispersed and activated in a compatible organic liquid, CP-40 can develop a thixotropic structure. This structure helps increase low-shear viscosity and suspend solid particles at rest, while allowing the material to flow under application shear. Its recovery after shear supports anti-settling and sag resistance without being intended to eliminate flow and leveling.

Applications for CP-40

ApplicationPotential formulation roleWhat to validate
Solvent-borne paints and coatingsThixotropy, pigment suspension and sag resistanceSettling, film build, flow and leveling; haze and color for transparent coatings
Lubricating greaseRheology and consistency contributionBase-oil compatibility, process, target consistency and stability
Adhesives and sealantsThixotropy, filler suspension and sag resistanceResin compatibility, extrusion, vertical sag and cured performance
Printing inksBody and particle suspensionVehicle compatibility, print transfer and appearance
Diesel-based drilling fluidsRheology and suspension contributionBase-fluid compatibility and the relevant mud test method

CP-40 may also be evaluated as an alternative to fumed silica in selected solvent-borne formulations. This is a formulation-specific comparison, not a universal one-for-one replacement. Compare dispersion, rheology, appearance and end-use performance in laboratory trials.

Dosage, Activation and Dispersion

The typical CP-40 addition level is 0.2–2.0% by weight of the formulation. Select the final level from laboratory trials using the actual solvent, binder, pigments or fillers, and application method. The stated range is not a grease- or drilling-fluid-specific dosage recommendation.

CP-40 is a conventional grade. For best efficiency, the supplied guidance recommends 95% ethanol or 95% methanol at 30–40% of CP-40 weight. Confirm the suitable activator and level for the specific solvent and binder system.

High-Shear Pre-Gel Procedure

  1. Charge the selected solvent to the mill or dispersing vessel.
  2. Under agitation, slowly add CP-40 at 8–10% of the total pre-gel weight.
  3. Mix at high speed for 5 minutes.
  4. Add the selected polar activator at the level established for the formulation.
  5. Mix at high speed for a further 5 minutes, then check gel development and uniformity.
  6. Add the pre-gel to the main batch and adjust based on application testing.

Heating is not required to obtain good dispersion. Add powder gradually to reduce agglomeration. Set the final mixing speed, sequence and dosage using the actual formulation and production equipment. For background, see how organoclay builds a thixotropic structure.

CP-40 Grade Selection

Choose CP-40 when your formulation is solvent-based and falls in the low- to intermediate-polarity range, and when a conventional grade with an external polar activator fits your process. CP-40 and CP-34 are separate grades; compare their current grade-specific TDS against your formulation rather than treating them as aliases or direct substitutes. If your system is more polar or you prefer a self-activating grade, review CP-APA and confirm fit with technical support.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is CP-40 organoclay used for?
CP-40 is a rheological additive for solvent-based formulations. Listed applications include transparent, alkyd and polyester coatings, lubricating grease, printing inks, sealants, adhesives and diesel-based drilling fluids. It supports thixotropy, particle suspension and sag resistance.
What is the typical CP-40 dosage?
The typical addition level is 0.2–2.0% by weight of the formulation. The final amount depends on the solvent, binder, solids, target rheology and application. Establish dosage by testing the complete formulation.
Does CP-40 require a polar activator?
CP-40 is a conventional grade. For best efficiency, the supplied guidance recommends 95% ethanol or 95% methanol at 30–40% of CP-40 weight. Confirm the type and amount for the actual solvent and binder system.
Can CP-40 replace fumed silica?
CP-40 can be evaluated as an alternative rheology modifier in selected solvent-borne systems. It is not a universal one-for-one replacement; compare dispersion, rheology, appearance and end-use performance in the full formulation.
How should CP-40 be stored and what packaging is available?
Store CP-40 in a dry, well-ventilated area at 0–30°C and keep the package closed. The stated quality-guarantee period is 24 months under recommended conditions. Packaging options include kraft bags, kraft bags with a PE inner liner, 25 kg, 50 lb and 600 kg bags, subject to confirmation.
What is the CP-40 delivery lead time?
