Standard DMDA Organoclay — Substitution & Grade Selection Guide

CP-34 is a dimethyl dioctadecyl ammonium (DMDA)-modified montmorillonite organoclay — the most widely specified chemistry for solvent-based coatings and oil-based drilling applications. This guide helps formulators match and switch to CP-34 from any equivalent standard grade.

What Is Standard DMDA Organoclay?

Standard DMDA organoclay is the baseline chemistry for the most widely used organoclay rheology modifiers in industrial coatings and drilling fluids. It is produced by reacting high-purity sodium montmorillonite with dimethyl dioctadecyl ammonium (DMDA) chloride via wet-process ion-exchange, then drying and milling to specification.

In brief: DMDA organoclay builds a thixotropic platelet network in aromatic and moderate-polarity solvent systems, providing anti-settling, anti-sagging, and viscosity control at treat rates of 0.3–1.5 wt%.

How to Qualify CP-34 Against a Current Grade

CP-34 is a DMDA-modified wet-process organoclay. Shared chemistry alone does not establish equivalent performance in a specific coating or mud; screen it at the same addition level and confirm the complete formulation before substitution.

  1. Request a free CP-34 sample (200 g–2 kg available by courier)
  2. Run a side-by-side dispersion test in your current formulation at the same treat rate
  3. Measure thixotropic index and anti-settling performance against your current result
  4. We provide TDS, SDS, and COA for full qualification documentation
